Sacramento Studying How to Fix Dangerous Roads and Intersections

City of Sacramento Study Looks Into Dangers Roadways

Sacramento drivers have been long been rated as some of the worst in the country. But it’s possible that one factor contributing to this ranking is the design of the roadways and intersections, making them more dangerous.

The city recently decided to move forward with a study of the most dangerous parts of the roadway to make things safer for vehicles, bikes, and pedestrians. The California Office of Traffic Safety ranks Sacramento as having the highest rate of deadly or serious injuries that involve speeding, intoxication , driving at night, and hit and runs. The city also ranks highest in the total number of fatalities of children under 15 who are on bikes or as pedestrians.

New Guidelines for Safety

Last week the City Council adopted a resolution seeking state funding for a project on how to design streets better with an eye toward safety. The focus of the study is on transportation safety. It will look into factors contributing to specific areas being more dangerous and their high crash rates; community input of the areas; and best practices of safety and road design and integrating their findings.

Top 5 Dangerous Roadways of Sacramento

The city began a study in 2017 of the five road corridors with the highest number of fatal crashes and serious injuries in the last several years. They are:

• Marysville Boulevard corridor North Avenue to Arcade Boulevard
• South Stockton Boulevard corridor from McMahon Drive to Patterson Way
• El Camino Avenue area from Del Paso Boulevard to the levee trail along Steelhead Creek
• Florin Road corridor from 24th Street to Munson Way
• Broadway and Stockton Boulevard from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to 13th Avenue

The new study will include the corridors from the previous one as well as the following:

• Northgate Boulevard from San Juan Road to Wilson Avenue
• Arden Way area from Harvard Street to Ethan Way
• 12th Street from North B Street to L Street
• Valley Hi and Mack Road from Center Parkway to Stockton Boulevard
• Howe Avenue area from Folsom Boulevard to Swarthmore Drive

Can the local government be held responsible for auto collisions?

It’s possible that a bad road design or lack of maintenance can contribute to a car crash. This is one reason that we recommend taking pictures of the surrounding scene just in case.

However, if you’re injured on a public road or public land, there is a separate timeline for filing a claim against a governmental entity. This timeline is much shorter than and has to be handled differently than a typical personal injury matter against a private business or individual.
If you were injured on public property, seeking out a personal injury lawyer familiar with this area is important to get the proper compensation for your injuries.

Being in a car crash is never something we expect or want to deal with.
